AFMC GOLDEN JUBILEE SEA TO SAND EXPEDITION- SEP 2011
The Adventure club of Armed Forces Medical College organized a Sea to sand Expedition in Gujarat & Rajastan from 03 Sep to 23 Sep 2011. The Expedition was organized as part of the one year long Golden Jubilee celebrations of the college wef Aug 2011 to Aug 2012. The Nineteen member team lead by Lt Col K Mohanlal comprised of two Officers (Col Vivek Sharma & Lt Col Mohanlal), 16 Medical cadets and 01 Other rank. The expedition was flagged off by Air Marshal GS Joneja,VM, Director & Commandant, in presence of Maj Gen Manoj Luthra , VSM, Dean & Dy Commandant at AFMC on 02 Sep 2011. The expedition was planned to be conducted in 03 phases : a) Phase -1 : Sea sailing in the Gulf of Kutch b) Phase -2 : BAUT sailing in the Little Rann of Kutch (Gujarat) c) Phase -3 : Camel safari in Barmer district of Rajastan The sea sailing (Phase I), planned to be conducted on 06 Sep from Okha (Dwarka) to Kandla port, was unfortunately cancelled due to extremely bad weather and the signs of a developing cyclone in Arabian sea. The team then proceeded to the second phase (BAUT sailing) in the Little Rann of Kutch. On Day 1 they sailed from Tikkakal to Kasmera Bhet and back covering a distance of 28 kms. On Day 2 the team shifted from BAUT to small wooden boats due to the low level of water in Kuda region where the second phase was to end. The approach to these areas was extremely difficult due to heavy rains in the preceding days. The area was non- negotiable even by using tractors, hence the BAUTs had to be lifted manually by the team members through long stretches of swamps, each time they were to set sail. On Day 2 the team had to traverse a distance of 10 km through the slushy terrain before reaching the starting point for the day. The third phase was a 5 days’ Camel safari from Bakhasar to Chauhtan via Gangasara, Punjasar, Rabbasar and Bhawari, covering a distance of 105 kms. The team visited remote border villages and organized health education lectures for the villagers. The expedition was flagged in by Maj Gen Manoj Luthra, VSM, Dean & Dy Commandant at AFMC on 23 Sep 2011. As the expedition was conducted with least possible Adm support, it provided the cadets an exposure to ‘Field like’ conditions. The aim of the expedition was to familiarize ‘future doctors’ of the Armed Forces with the terrain, environment and the population of Gujarat & Rajasthan. It also encouraged them to develop a spirit of adventure, leadership qualities, team spirit and sensitivity.
