The Department of Dermatology provides inpatient and out patient treatment to dermatological, STD, Leprosy and Immune-surveillance (HIV/AIDS) cases of Pune garrison and referred cases of Southern Command. It is responsible for trg of post graduates (MD/DDVL), undergraduates (MBBS) and paramedicals (Nur Cadets, STAs & NAs). In addition to an 85 bedded Skin, STD & Leprosy Centre, this department also manages an Immunodeficiency Centre (IDC) within existing resources since 1992; including inpatient care, documentation and surveillance of HIV/AIDS pers registered at this Immunodeficiency centre. The formal establishment of the post graduate teaching Dept of Dermatology and Venereology of Armed Forces Medical College and Command Hospital (Southern Command), Pune was in the year 1965 with Diploma in Dermatology and Venereology in Ward no 3 of Command Hospital (Southern Command), Pune. It was later shifted to one of the oldest garrison accommodation of 1826 vintage in the Pune Camp.
The present Dept of Dermatology, STD & Leprosy and Immunodeficiency Centre of Command Hospital (SC) still functions in this ‘heritage’ building which has been refurbished to meet contemporary needs of a centre of academic excellence. The Department of Dermatology at AFMC has been accommodated in 2010 in newly constructed building having requisite facilities behind the lecture hall complex next to Dhanvantari auditorium. Brig AS Sohi was instrumental in introducing a comprehensive MD programme incorporating Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy, as no other University was offering an MD degree encompassing the three subjects. Over the years, more than a hundred Dermatologists have done their post graduation from AFMC, which has been consistently ranked as amongst the top Medical Colleges of the country.
Dermatology and Venereology were separate specialities in the Armed Forces till the mid twentieth century and were merged thereafter, in keeping with the trend in most of the countries. The Dept of Dermatology was established in the year 1965 in Ward 3 of CH (SC) along with Diploma in Dermatology and Venereology (DVD) course. It was later shifted to the location which is sited in govt accn of 1826 vintage. The MD (Dermatology, Venereology & Leprology) course under University of Pune was started in 1974. Over the years, the department has made remarkable progress under the guidance of various luminaries and stalwarts.
