At the time of establishment of AFMC 60 years ago, there was no separate Dept of Orthopaedics and Orthopaedics was a part of General Surgery and it was practiced by surgeons all over the Armed forces. Few of the General Surgeons who were interested in the specialty of Orthopaedics sought training abroad and practiced as Gen surgeon & orthopaedic Surgeon.
In 1967, Indian Universities started MS (Ortho) Course in the specialty of Orthopaedics. Armed Forces Medical College also followed suit and thus the Department of Orthopaedics was established at AFMC in May 1978. The responsibility of heading the department was bestowed upon the then Lt Col A S Chahal who later assumed the Office of DGMS (Air).
The surgeons were granted study leave for post graduation. Till 1996 the vast pool of General surgeons &Orthopaedic surgeons made the Orthopaedic pool of specialists. Understanding the need of day. Vastness of the subject and need to develop super-specialty in the subject the direct entry for orthopaedic specialty has been permitted.
Over the last 20 years, the department of Orthopaedics was accommodated in the Main Building of AFMC adjacent to and as a part of department of Surgery. On the occasion of Golden Jubilee celebrations in May 1998, the department of Orthopaedics was shifted to the new building complex. It was the first department to shift to Golden Jubilee Block, which was inaugurated by the then defence Minister, Mr. George Fernandes. The orthopaedic Dept at MH Khadki is affiliated to this Dept for teaching and training purposes.
