Updates organized

a)  A CME programme titled ‘Widening Horizons in Anaesthesiology’ was held on 18 -19 Oct as part of World Anaesthesia Day celebrations. A galaxy of National and International experts graced the occasion and an extremely stimulating academic programme was appreciated by all.

b)    Pune branch of ISA under the stewardship of the department of Anaesthesiology AFMC Pune was awarded Winner for “ Best Awareness Programme” at the 56th Annual National Conference of the ISA held at Jodhpur 27-29 Dec 2008 for their path- breaking effort.

UPDATES

Half day CME and Anaesthesia quiz was organized on 15th Oct 2005 on the eve of World Anaesthesia day at Deena Nath Mangeshkar Hospital, which was attended by 200 delegates from Pune city branch of ISA.

17th Annual conference of Research Society of Anaesthesiology & Clinical Pharmacology was held on 10-12th Nov 2006. Noted anaesthesiologists from civilian stream as well as service delegates attended the conference. Four pre-conference workshops were organized - ultrasound guided nerve blocks, ACLS, difficult airway and ventilatory support.

The department is in charge of the  Executive Body of the ISA Pune City branch and holds regular monthly meetings

         ANAESTHESIA AWARENESS PROGRAMME

The department organized a weeklong Anaesthesia Awareness programme from 09th Oct to 16th Oct 2006 and World Anaesthesia Day on 15th Oct 2005. A mobile van equipped with charts on history of anaesthesia, anaesthesia procedures and monitoring equipment was taken to the prominent places of city, schools, Government institutions and hospitals. Peoples from all walks of life visited the van; their queries relating to anaesthesia and resuscitation were answered. Both the programme were overwhelmingly successful. The Pune city branch of ISA, under the departments charge, was awarded the best city branch for its work in the field of public awareness during the Annual conference held at Mysore in Dec 2006.

INTERVENTIONAL PAIN MANAGEMENT

The department refined the technique of neurolytic paravertebral block for advanced cancer pain relief. A large number of patients including civilians are being treated with this and other techniques

 MODERNISATION

The following Items have been recently procured

  • Ultrasonic guided central venous cannulation
  • Target controlled infusion pump
  • Intubation Manikin
  • ACLS Manikin
  • Osmometer
  • Human Patient Simulator
  • ABG analysers

HUMAN PATIENT SIMULATOR- The Department of Anaesthesiology became the first academic department in the country to possess a Human Patient Simulator (METI) at the cost of 2.5 crores ( Approximately $500,000 ) with physiologic and pharmacologic modeling, as well as the capability for simulated trauma and cardiac support interventions. This has proved invaluable in the training of Anaesthesiology Residents and Undergraduate students

 FUTURE PLANS

The department plans to start a university recognized diploma for class I ORAs in order to improve their training and job prospects.

The department plans to start fellowships in Critical Care, Neuroanaesthesia at Command Hospital (Southern Command) and Cardiac anaesthesia at Military Hospital Cardiothoracic Center.

The department intends to pursue our goal of continuous improvement in perioperative care of patients in OT and ICU and to relieve pain in all conditions, especially in advanced cancer patients.
