Department of Cardiology

ForensicThe Department of Cardiology was first set up as a part of the Cardiothoracic Centre in 1964 with Lt Col IM Ahuja as its first head of department.

A new Cardiology block added in the year 2001, with OPD services, 93 bedded Cardiology wards, and ICCU complex.

The department initially had facilities of non-invasive laboratory like 2 D Echocardiography, Treadmill testing, Holter monitoring and HUTT but later added one of the first cath laboratories in 1991. The First digital single plane interventional cardiac catheterisation lab was installed in 2001. A new state of the art Biplane Cardiac Cath Lab was installed in the year 2012.

The department is capable of performing all diagnostic, interventional, coronary, structural procedures, electrophysiological studies, pacemakers and device therapy for heart failure and paediatric interventions.

The department has recently been renovated with a state of art 22 bedded cardiac ICU, and a new OPD complex. The department has an advanced 4D high end echocardiography system, complemented by point of care hand held portable echocardiography system for diagnosis of cardiac ailments at bed side in the emergency department.

The department also is involved in training the undergraduates and post graduates of AFMC, along with the paramedical personnel of the Indian Armed Forces. The department also has the distinction of being one of the earliest hospitals running MCI recognised structured DM cardiology programme in India and the Armed forces. The Department is affiliated to MUHS erstwhile Poona University.


Only department in Armed Forces recognized for training of post-doctoral program in DM (Cardiology).

It is one of the oldest institutes not only in Maharashtra but India to be recognized for the DM Cardiology programme.

Structured training program in the form of seminars, journal clubs, case presentations.

Extensive hands-on training in noninvasive cardiology and invasive cardiology in diagnostic and interventional procedures both in adult and pediatric cardiology.

The department has been recognized by MCI for 1 DM seat per year under the aegis of MUHS, Nashik.

Cardiology rotation for MD Medicine students of Armed Forces Medical College.

Exposure to management of cardiac emergencies , disorders and exposed to basic knowledge of non-invasive cardiology like echocardiography, 24 hour Holter monitoring and stress testing.

Training for BSc PMT course which is a four-year degree course for training of paramedical staff in the field of Cardiology.

Comprehensive training in the field ranging from basic sciences, pathogenesis and management of cardiac disorders, technical know-how of non-invasive cardiac evaluation and are trained to assist in all cardiac procedures in the cardiac cath lab.

The First course with mandatory one year internship passed out in 2020.

In addition Nursing students of College of Nursing ,AFMC doing BSc ,Post Certificate BSc Nursing and MSc Nursing are given a cardiology exposure and trained here.
