Department of Orthopaedics

ortho afmc At the time of establishment of AFMC 60 years ago, there was no separate dept of Orthopaedics. Orthopaedics was a part of General Surgery and was practised by surgeons all over the Armed Forces. Few of the general surgeons who were interested in the specialty of Orthopaedics sought training abroad and practiced as General Surgeons & Orthopaedic Surgeons.

In 1967, Indian universities started MS (Ortho) course in the specialty of Orthopaedics. Armed Forces Medical College also followed suit and thus the department of Orthopaedics was established at AFMC in May 1978. The responsibility of heading the department was bestowed upon then Lt Col A S Chahal who later assumed the office of DGMS(Air).

The surgeons were granted study leave for post-graduation. Till 1996, General Surgeons & Orthopaedic Surgeons made the Orthopaedic pool of specialists. Understanding the need of day, vastness of the subject and the need to develop super-specialty in the subject, direct entry for Orthopaedic specialty was permitted.

Over the last 20 years, the department of Orthopaedics was accommodated in the main building of AFMC adjacent to and as a part of department of Surgery. On the occasion of golden jubilee celebrations in May 1998, the department of Orthopaedics was shifted to the new building complex. It was the first department to shift to golden jubilee block, which was inaugurated by the then defence minister, Mr. George Fernandes. The Orthopaedic dept at MH Kirkee is affiliated to this dept for teaching and training purposes.
