The Department of Pediatrics was created with the inception of the graduate wing as a
requirement of Poona University as a separate department in Feb 1965 with Lt Col AR
Subramanian as the first Head of Department. Since its birth it has grown everyday as a normal
child. The department was recognized for DCH in 1970, for MD in 1967 and PhD in 1970. In
addition to undergraduate and postgraduate training, it also provides training for various courses
in College of Nursing and to medical & specialist officers.
Integral to its training activities, the department lays emphasis on and encourages conducting
medical research in a wide variety of pediatric and pediatric subspeciality related topics and
interdepartmental collaborative research including with other institutions and organizations.
To impart comprehensive medical education in the art and science of Pediatric medicine to post graduates, undergraduates, nursing officers and probationer nurses
To provide preventive, curative, and promotive healthcare to dependent population (service and civil) of children and adolescents
To cultivate, encourage and sustain an attitude for basic and advanced scientific research at all levels starting from undergraduates.
The department also offers daily OPD services for both service and civilian children including subspecialty OPD in neonatology, cardiology, neurology, nephrology, pulmonology, genetics and thalassemia on following days.
