Following world war, there was a need for Neurosurgical care in India. In order, to fulfil this requirement, a neurosurgical centre of 100 beds was established at 126 Indo-British General Hospital [IBGH] Poona in 1944. Soon after its inception, this centre moved to Secunderabad. Subsequently following Chinese and Pakistan hostilities in 1962 & 1965, Department of Neurosurgery was established at Command Hospital, SC Pune in 1963 under able guidance of Lt Col Mahender Singh. Since its inception the department has grown leaps and bounds and has been performing wide verities of cranial and spinal cases ranging from complicated skull base tumors, Microvascular surgeries, endoscopic surgeries, deep brain stimulation (DBS) to complex spinal instrumentations and motion preserving surgeries. State-of the art high-tech facilities are available to patients and it is a recognized Super speciality training centre.

The Department of Neurosurgery currently has 03 faculty members and 3 senior Residents. It conducts 2 neurosurgical Outpatient clinics per week ( Monday & Friday; from 8 AM onwards). The specialized areas in which focused services are offered include : Paediatric Neurosurgery, Cerebro-vascular surgery, Skull Base surgery, Surgery for peripheral nerve injury, Neuroendocrine surgery, Neuro-Oncology, Surgery for complex spinal disorders and minimally invasive spine surgery, Image guided and Endoscopic surgery, Functional, Epilepsy and Stereotactic surgery, and Neurosurgical intensive care services.
