The department's primary objective lies in the comprehensive impartation of knowledge and training in the intricate domains of Obstetrics and Gynecology to both undergraduates and postgraduates. It endeavours to instil within them an insatiable thirst for knowledge and proficiency, coupled with an unwavering commitment to achieving excellence, all while fostering a profound empathy towards the cause of women's health.

The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology has a rich tradition of excellence since its establishment in January 1965, led by Col N J Choksey. Its remarkable history is marked by pioneering milestones in various fields, including Urogynaecology (Khanna's Sling), Feto-Maternal medicine (India's Youngest Intra-Uterine Transfusion), Gynaecological Oncology, Minimal Access Surgery, Critical Care Obstetrics, Gynaecologic Endocrinology, Preventive Oncology, and Reproductive Medicine.

The department efficiently serves 33,000 outdoor patients annually through its four units. It performs approximately 1500 major surgeries, 500 minor surgeries, 3000 deliveries, and 5000 OPD procedures each year. Additionally, it operates an outreach program in the village of Kasurdi. The department contributes to medical education by training 150 undergraduates, 8 postgraduates, 10 medical officers in MOJCC, 60 nursing officers, and 25 para-medical workers. It conducts 250 clinics, 120 lectures, 50 tutorials, and various educational activities for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The department adheres to the assessment norms of Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, utilizing both formative and summative evaluation methods. Notably, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the department successfully incorporated e-resources, resulting in exceptional university results for our students.

The department's outstanding gynaecologists, who have served as dedicated teachers, have played a vital role in establishing its enviable reputation nationwide. With a focus on holistic and evidence-based healthcare, the department's contributions have been recognized globally through publications that influence best clinical practices.

Fostering a culture of inspiration, curiosity, confidence, attitude, understanding, communication, innovation, and skill acquisition, the department encourages students' pursuit of knowledge. The environment nurtures a passion for learning and develops the character and calibre of future doctors. It actively promotes women's empowerment and nurtures the leadership potential of every student.

As part of its efforts to enhance capacity building, the department has extended its services to two renowned healthcare facilities: Sardar Ballabh Bhai Cantonment General Hospital and Chandumamma Municipality Hospital, starting from June 1st, 2023. This expansion will result in a substantial increase in the number of deliveries, estimated at around 5,500 per year. To ensure safe motherhood and promote the health of newborns, the department has implemented evidence-based protocols for the management of labouring mothers.

Furthermore, the department has successfully implemented a curriculum-based medical education system, enhancing its teaching methodologies and professional activities. It is equipped with cutting-edge facilities, including a state-of-the-art skill lab with simulators and a museum featuring an interactive kiosk. Looking ahead, the department plans to integrate artificial intelligence and integrated medicine into its clinical practice, fostering innovative approaches to healthcare.

These enhancements aim to provide superior healthcare services while fostering continuous improvement in medical education and practice. Currently, the department is pushing boundaries under the dynamic leadership of Col Madhusudhan Dey.
